I want to talk about the most over classified form of rock music in this blog entry—alternative rock. What is alternative rock and why do you always here tons of bands classifying themselves as alternative rock band when they are clearly not? The answer is simple—alternative rock is a much overused term. Back in the hay day of alternative rock music the precedent was set by mainstream acts that broke the classic rock and the 80’s butt rock edge. Bands like Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots. These bands had a mainstream yet edgier appeal. A more burlesque flavor of rock and roll—one that greatly differed from all forms of mainstream music that was present at the time. Then along came about ten zillion other bands who tried to say they to were alternative rock bands when really they are just mainstream carbon copy knock offs, trying to make their way into a cluttered and very cutthroat music industry—one that over classifies certain bands and turns a cold shoulder to others. Point and case—alternative rock is a 90’s term and should stay that way.
